“I came from a very troubled home, Rochel was there for me when no one else was.”

I can never thank her enough for the gift of being there for me when I most desperately needed it.

I came from a very troubled home, and Rochel was there for me when no one else was. I was a lot louder and less refined than she was, but she accepted me anyway and invested herself in our friendship. I used to go to her house every Shabbos afternoon-it was an oasis for me-and call her very often during the week. She had so much patience, and as naive as she was compared to me (lucky her!) she somehow knew the right thing to say in response to my complaints and problems. We baked cookies together, sang and recorded ourselves, went shopping and tried on ridiculous outfits…it was fun being silly with her! Even after I left town for the rest of high school we would get together every time I was back in Crown Heights. Although we don’t keep in touch to the same extent nowadays I still treasure our friendship.  Ninth grade was my worst year ever, and I felt suicidal more than once. On one cold winter evening I actually wanted to take my own life, Chas V’Sholom. I called Rochel and she stayed on the phone with me for a very long time, listening to me and calming me down. She might have failed the math test the next day because I took the time during which she meant to study, but she saved my life. I can never thank her enough for the gift of being there for me when I most desperately needed it.
