“I think my self-esteem really grew from hearing these nice qualities about me.”

Story by: Devorah Leah Wircberg

I used to cherish those letters that were written to me personally in her handwriting! It just felt very special.

It’s not exactly a story. It’s just my overall memories about being in Kitah Daled, 4th grade, at BR in CH. My morah was Morah Gurary (Kozliner).

She was so fun to learn with. I remember she always sang along with us at davening. I remember her being so dedicated to the girls and the class. She used to hang up nice stuff on the walls, it was so colorful and felt so welcoming to enter into the classroom. I was generally a good student, so she chose me many times to be the talmida shavua (student of the week). I felt so proud whenever I came home with awards and my mother was so happy with me. She also had really nice things to tell my mother about me at PTA. She wrote such nice things about me on the back of the report card each semester.

I think my self-esteem really grew from hearing these nice qualities about me. All in all, I felt like she truly loved me. It was a nice feeling!

Something else Morah Gurary did in my class, that I loved so much! She made a bulletin board on the back wall of the classroom with envelopes of each girl’s name and an envelope for her as well. This was a little “letter-mail” system in which we were able to write her things not only about class, anything we felt we wanted to share with her, and then we would put our letter into her envelope. She used to write back to us and put in our envelope.

It was so exciting to get a letter from Morah Gurary herself! I used to cherish those letters that were written to me personally in her handwriting! It just felt very special. I even think that it fostered my love of writing because of this!
