“It was challenging and I tried as first year teachers do- really hard to captivate, engage and connect with the class. It wasn’t easy.”
Story by: Rivka Cohen (Rubin)
Yocheved was my student in junior school. And I remember not one kindness but kindness from her that Id like to try and articulate.
I had previously taught in out of town schools and I had taught younger grades. Now I had come to live in Crown Heights and got the job teaching history to sixth and seventh graders.
Bnos Menachem sixth grade felt urban and scary. It was a culture shock and a real different mentality. It was challenging and I tried as first year teachers do- really hard to captivate, engage and connect with the class. It wasn’t easy.
Usually you think about a kindness being from a teacher to a student but as a teacher I felt kindness from her. I suppose I felt a certain kinship with her , as I felt a bit different , not fully accepted, not yet really part of the system.
Yocheved was curious, open and understanding. Very academic and determined she was ready to work. And she was respectful.
I suppose I felt a certain kinship with her , as I felt different, not fully accepted, not yet really part of the system.
Her kindness showed in her respect and in her appreciation and active interest of the classes. And her willingness to accept me and help develop the teacher in me.
Thats what I remember about Yocheved.
Thank you Yocheved.
